Things you MUST do on your website

Website TipsSo a few weeks ago we told you what you should not do on your website.  Now we really want to tell you what you should do.  We’re not going to bore you with a bunch of non-related details, so let’s dive right into it.

Your Website should have a focus

Meaning you should not have just a bunch of information thrown on a page.  Let each element and sentence on your website have a meaning, it should be significantly relevant, especially if it is on the home page.  The main way to bring focus to your website is to make it clear why you want them to visit your website.  The purpose should be clear to the visitor within the first few seconds of being on the website.

Use Correct Spelling & Grammar

Make sure whether using a simple spell check, Ginger, which is awesome by the way or a professional editor.  Make sure that you have something or someone in place to review content before it’s published online.  Depending on your audience, some slang or industry language may be permitted or necessary here or there.  We talked more about that in our  10 Ways to make your website work for you article. In any case, the content of your website should be easy to read and flow through it with ease.  This is not the case if there are numerous of spelling and grammar mistakes.

Font & Text Readability

This was a huge problem years ago, when websites first became popular. Everyone was so excited about the different backgrounds available and kind of went crazy in their creativity. Now that websites have been around a little longer, we’ve evolved and gotten much better about ensureing that our content on the website is readable. When choosing fonts consider the background that it will be published on, consider the size of the font, consider the space in between lines. All of these elements plays a part of the readability of your website content. It should not be to large or to small. If someone has a difficult time reading they are obviously less likely to read it, no matter how great or important the information is.

Make navigation easy!

Make sure that you navigation flows and is in a place that’s easy to locate and read. Don’t make your visitor have to search forever to find how to move from page to page on your website. Because trust me, they won’t.

Give every page on your website a title

Making sure that EVERY page has a title will increase your page ranking. This is a simple yet very important thing to remember.

Make sure that your graphics have alt tags

What are alt tags, you may ask. Alt tags are an html element of a website that tells the web browser what the photo is. If your images on your website does not have alt tags, the browser is not so happy. Therefore when alt tags present, it increases your SEO rank.

Be consistent in your layout

Perfect example, do not have the navigation on the top on one page, then on the left side on another page and on the right side on another page. Your navigation links should be located in the same place on every page. Your color scheme should be consistent through out the website. Uniformity & consistency is a must!

Well for now, that should be enough to take in concerning your website. When these simple yet vitally important cyber rules are followed, your website visitors will be happier, browsers and search engines will be happier which will bring more traffic to your website which will ultimately make you happier.
